Message from the Governor-General on Greek Independence Day 2021

Message from the Governor-General of Australia

Greece and Greek people have shaped our world like few other nations. From ancient times to more modern history, from culture to art to philosophy and more, the impact has been profound.

This is particularly true in Australia. Our nations’ close relationship and friendship is underpinned by the people who call both countries home.

The large number of Greek immigrants in the post-war years helped build our modern Australia. As the years and generations have passed the bond between our countries has only grown stronger.

On behalf of all Australians, I would like to use the occasion of the bicentenary of Greece’s Revolution for Independence to celebrate this bond and to acknowledge the remarkable contribution that Greek Australians make to our local communities and to our nation. In my role I have the opportunity to meet outstanding Australians each and every day. Linda and I are privileged to witness great acts of kindness and compassion and see incredible examples of community spirit and selfless service.

This richness of spirit is evident in the Greek Australian community – it should be recognised and celebrated.

To that end, in this bicentenary year, I encourage you to consider nominating someone from the Greek Australian community for recognition through the Order of Australia. The Order is our nation’s preeminent system through which to recognise achievement and service to the community. Anyone can nominate someone to be considered and all Australians, regardless of their background or field of endeavour, are eligible.

We all know people like this and I need you to nominate them so that we, as a nation, can say well done and thank you.

David Hurley
